Bhimbetka Rock Shelters
Prehistoric rock art in the Vindhya foothills — a UNESCO World Heritage Site just south of Bhopal.
Representative photo≈ 45 km from Bhopal
The rock shelters at Bhimbetka hold paintings that span many thousands of years. The ride south of the city runs through open country into wooded hills, and the site itself is best explored slowly, on foot.
Travel notes
Carry water and wear shoes you can walk in — the shelters are reached on foot from the parking area.
Road safety
Highway traffic is heavy and fast on the way out of the city; keep to safe group spacing.
Rules, permits and access
A protected World Heritage Site — entry tickets and site timings apply. Never touch the paintings.
